My name is Mr. Gibson and I am the Physical Education teacher at St. James the Greater School in Dogtown. I am also the P.E. teacher at another St. Louis Archdiocesan school and a baseball coach at St. Mary's High School in south St. Louis.
I believe that all students should have the opportunity to experience a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. One of my goals as a Catholic school teacher is to assist young people in experiencing God's grace through sportsmanlike play in a highly encouraging environment. I believe firmly in positive reinforcement and team play as a means of building self-esteem.
I received my degree in Physical Education from Lindenwood University. I am certified in both P.E. and Health by the state of Missouri. Prior to coming to St. James, I taught in the Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood School Districts in North St. Louis County. I have also taught at Metropolitan School in Maplewood, which serves students with autism and learning disabilities.
During P.E. classes in the younger grades, we concentrate on how to move through space with control and safety. We learn basic movements performed in physical activity and athletics. We cover skills in major units such as soccer, basketball, and softball. In the older grades, we continue to hone our skills as they pertain to athletics and safe play. We perform lead-up activities in major sport units and eventually engage in game play. All rules of each game and activity are clearly explained and emphasis on a healthy lifestyle is consistent throughout the school year. We will discuss and practice proper nutrition and care of the body.
All students will also get the opportunity to participate in annual Field Day events. This is a fun day in which students get explore the "lighter side" of recreational games and above all, HAVE FUN!
We will also participate in the Presidential Fitness Challenge. This will give students the opportunity to receive local and national recognition for achieving fitness goals over the course of each school year.
I feel it is truly a privilege to educate young people in this capacity at a wonderful school such as St. James!
