5th Grade

School Notes Site

Hello, my name is Tara Murphey. I have the 5th grade homeroom. My class is modular, meaning I teach a number of subjects to different grade levels throughout the day. I teach 6th grade English, and 7th grade Social Studies. I also teach 5th Reading, 5th Math, 5th English, 5th Social Studies and 5th Spelling and Vocabulary.

In 5th grade Reading, we use a literature set which is several stories compiled into one book that has workbook pages that go along with each story. Also, we complete two novels during the year. We read Tuck Everlasting first semester and The Secret Garden second semester. In 5th grade Math, we use the Saxon Math Series. The Saxon Math Series is a spiraling series, which means that it reviews concepts taught all year. In 5th grade Social Studies, our book is very broad - we cover concepts from Mayan culture all they way through current news. In 5th grade English, we are learning to write many kinds of papers. Our most important paper that we will write this year is a research report that ties in with our Science Fair projects. Also, we will be learning to write a speech and present it to the class. In 5th grade Spelling and Vocabulary, we are learning new patterns in words. We write stories and poems as a way to practice and understand the words that we study in each unit.

In 5th grade, we do many exciting things outside of our daily classroom work. We participate in the Junior Achievement Program, where the students do career research and learn to be an adult for a day. We also spend the night at the Zoo and learn about all kinds of different animals.

In 6th grade English, we are learning to write many different kinds of papers as well. We will also write is a research report that also ties in with our Science Fair projects.

The 7th grade Social Studies curriculum is all-encompassing. We cover topics from ancient cultures all they way through the beginning of the Civil War.

I have been at Saint James the Greater for three years now. I have learned a lot about myself in my years of teaching here. Saint James is a great place to help students to succeed in life and to learn the skills they will need in the future.
